Booking a Key West fishing charter: what to know first
By Brian Williamson, Key West · Updated October 2, 2026
The short answer
On a licensed Florida charter, the boat's charter license covers its paying customers, so you usually don't need your own saltwater fishing license — up to the number of customers on that license. Decide between a private charter (just your group, the captain plans around you) and a shared trip (pay per person, fish with others). Then ask what's included and what the trip targets. If you rent a boat and fish on your own, anglers 16 and older generally need their own Florida saltwater license.
| Private charter | Shared trip | Rent a boat | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who's aboard | Your group only | You plus other anglers | Your group, you drive |
| Fishing license | Covered by the charter's license | Covered by the charter's license | Anglers 16+ generally need their own |
| Best for | Groups, families, targeting a species | Solo anglers, smaller budgets | Experienced anglers and boaters |

The license question
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) says customers fishing on a vessel with a valid charter license are covered by that license, up to the number of customers it lists. Bag and size limits still apply — the captain will know them.
What to ask before you book
What species and type of fishing (flats, reef, offshore), how long the trip runs and where it departs, what's included (bait, tackle, cleaning your catch), the maximum number of guests, and the weather and cancellation policy.
Renting a boat to fish instead
If someone in your group can run a boat in the Keys, a center-console rental lets you fish on your own schedule. Each angler 16 or older generally needs a Florida saltwater fishing license, and boater education rules apply to the driver.
Common questions
Do I need a fishing license on a Key West charter?
Usually not — FWC says customers on a vessel with a valid charter license are covered, up to the number of customers that license lists. Ask your captain to confirm.
Do I need a license if I rent a boat and fish?
Generally yes for anglers 16 and older. Florida saltwater licenses are sold through FWC's official licensing site.
Should I tip the captain and mate?
Tipping the crew is customary on fishing charters; how much is up to you.
