Keys boating guide

Rent a boat and drive it yourself, or hire a captain?

By Brian Williamson, Key West · Updated October 1, 2026

    The short answer

Drive it yourself if someone in your group is comfortable handling a boat, you want to set your own schedule, and you're happy navigating shallow, unfamiliar water. Hire a captain if nobody has boating experience, you want to fish or find the best sandbar without guessing, or you'd rather everyone relax. In Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 needs a boating safety education ID card to drive a boat with a 10 hp or larger motor; rental companies explain the options before you go.

    Why the water matters here

The Keys are shallow in many places, with sandbars, seagrass and channels that change with the tide. Running aground is a real risk for first-time drivers. If no one in your group has read a chart or run a boat in shallow water, a captain is the safer choice.

    The boater education rule

Florida Statutes §327.395: a person born on or after January 1, 1988 may not operate a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or more without a boating safety education ID card and photo ID aboard. There are exemptions, such as being accompanied by a qualifying adult. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also describes a temporary certificate option — ask your rental company what they accept.

    A middle option

Some rental listings offer a captain as an add-on, and some are 'boat rental with captain'. Help Me Choose shows which listings say so; confirm the details with the operator.

    Common questions

Do I need a boating license to rent a boat in Key West?

Florida doesn't issue a general boating license. If you were born on or after January 1, 1988, you need a boating safety education ID card (or a qualifying exemption) to drive a boat with a 10 hp or larger motor. Ask your rental company about the temporary certificate option.

Is a captain worth it for a sandbar day?

If no one has boated in shallow water before, usually yes: the captain knows where to anchor and when the tide works. If you're experienced, a self-drive rental gives you more freedom.

Who decides if the weather is too rough?

The operator. Rental companies and captains can cancel or shorten trips for safety; their policy is on the booking page.
