SNORKEL
Reef snorkel — Key West vs. Key Largo, and why the difference matters
Same barrier reef, same fish, very different day. Key Largo means shorter boat ride, better vis on calm days. Key West means Sand Key Light and a live channel.
The Florida Reef Tract is one continuous reef — the third-largest in the world — running from Key Biscayne down past the Dry Tortugas. When you snorkel out of Key West, you're on the same reef you'd snorkel out of Key Largo. Same fish species, same coral, same water.
But the trip is different. Very different.
Key Largo snorkel: John Pennekamp is the closest reef to shore anywhere in the continental US. You board the boat, you're at Molasses Reef or the Christ statue in 25 minutes. Total trip is 3-4 hours. Water is often calmer because you're inside the reef line and you don't cross open Gulf. It's the easier day, especially with kids.
Key West snorkel: The reef sits 6-8 nautical miles offshore. Boat ride is 45-60 minutes each way through open water. On a calm day it's a beautiful cruise. On a windy day it's a slog. The trade-off is you're at Sand Key Light or the Eastern Dry Rocks — spots that see less traffic than Molasses and often have better fish schools because they're farther from anchor damage.
Here's the honest call: if you're already in Key West, don't drive to Key Largo just for the snorkel — the difference isn't worth 4 hours in the car. But if you're staying in the upper Keys, don't drive to Key West for the snorkel either. Book what's local.
Both trips include gear, both include a captain and a divemaster or snorkel guide, and both should cost about $75-$120 per adult depending on the boat size. If you're paying more than $150, you're paying for a smaller boat and it's usually worth it — the party barges are okay, but you're one of 40 people on a rope.
One warning about Key West specifically: on high-wind days (over 20 mph east), the outer reef closes to the small boats. The big catamarans still run. If you're on vacation and picky about your day, book with a smaller operator and take the weather refund policy seriously.
